Wailing At The Full Moon Night Walk - Yarra Bend National Park, Fairfield
Fairfield Cricket Club
19:30 – 22:00
Noting that you have endured many Saturday nights stuck at home with nothing open under COVID-19 lockdown, here is an opportunity to "frock up" in your best winter outfits and head outdoors.  GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy, approximately 8 km, circuit walk.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The July 2020 full moon is due to be observed in Melbourne on Sunday 5 July. We will venture out on Saturday night (with better public transport options) for a sneak preview. Winter provides the best possibility of clear skies to maximise viewing the stunning moonlight. Yarra Bend Park provides an area with minimal artificial light thus maximising the impact of moonlight. The surface for this walk is 100 per cent pavement or compacted “blue metal”. Totally flat or undulating except for two small “huff and puff” inclines: 1) from Kane’s Bridge up to The Boulevard, and 2) from the Water Pipe Bridge up past the Pavilion at Fairfield Park. The walk will commence at the car park and head south along Yarra Bend Road past the old Fairfield Hospital (now Melbourne Polytechnic) to cross the Yarra at Kane’s bridge. The walk will then proceed along The Boulevard in Kew past Bellbird Park (home to the Fruit Bats), crossing the Eastern Freeway; an area which is a “hot spot” for watching New Years Eve fireworks. Crossing the Yarra River via the Water Pipe Bridge we will re-enter Fairfield Park.  MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 7:30pm at the car park opposite the Fairfield Cricket Club Rooms and Oval, Lot 113C Yarra Bend Rd, Fairfield. Access this from Yarra Bend Road. MAP REFERENCE: Melway map 30 grid H12 | Google map goo.gl/maps/EE9kCEsq3a4bood46.  TRANSPORT: Dennis Railway Station (Hurstbridge Line) is nearby. If coming from Dennis Railway Station head south along Victoria Rd and Jeffrey St, turn right into Heidelberg Rd (200m only) then left into Yarra Bend Rd. Collection from Dennis Station is possible if pre-arranged. WHAT TO BRING: Suitable clothing for a night-time event that will see the temperature drop. Comfortable walking boots/shoes and dress according to the weather forecast. Bring a torch; preferably one you can wear on your head. Make sure you have a 1 litre (minimum) water bottle with you. BOOKING: By Thursday 2nd July. Click on Get Tickets to register. LEADER: Garry O. | Email the Leader if you have any questions. 10:45 – 17:45
Enjoy a walk around the historic centre of Ballarat taking in some of the colourful history of the Victorian goldfields as well as some of Ballarat's magnificent parks and gardens. Limit of 20 participants. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy, approximately 11 km circuit walk.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The walk will commence with an exploration of the colourful history of landmark Victorian historical buildings in Lydiard St and this precinct’s links with the gay bushranger - Captain Moonlight, Dame Nellie Melba, Mark Twain, the first Royal Visit to Australia from Prince Alfred in 1867, Ballarat’s role in causing the British Government being obliged to make a huge compensation payment to the USA in 1865, Ballarat’s connection to the Burke and Wills expedition and, indirectly, to Jack The Ripper! Mount Evelyn and Silvan Reservoir Walk
679 Chirnside Park Shopping Centre Bus Departing From Ringwood Railway Station
11:01 – 17:00
Enjoy a pleasant Sunday walk in the scenic environs of Mount Evelyn and Silvan Reservoir. Limit of 10 participants. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: A moderate 11 km point-to-point walk with a few short steep sections. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Our walk commences on Tramway Track in Mount Evelyn which connects to Olinda Creek Track and Pipeline Track to provide a route through to Silvan Reservoir. While there is little evidence of its past uses, the route has served several purposes. Originally a tramway used for the collection of firewood to fuel lime kilns ran along the route. During the construction of the Silvan Reservoir an overhead cableway used the same corridor as it ran from the station at Mount Evelyn to the dam wall to convey building materials. Tracks along the route now provide service access to the pipeline which replaced the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct. For our purpose it provides a very pleasant walking track through a break in the eucalypt forest. Having made our way through to Silvan Reservoir Park we'll find a picnic table and enjoy our lunch break in the pleasant surrounds of the park. After lunch we'll stroll to the top of the dam wall for a view across the reservoir before leaving the park. We'll then follow bush tracks and cross over Olinda Creek to reach the last remaining section of the defunct Mount Evelyn Aqueduct. We'll follow the aqueduct track for around 2 km before meeting Monbulk Road which marks the end of our day's walk. Our return journey commences with a bus journey through to Lilydale to catch a train back to Ringwood or through to the city. FURTHER INFORMATION: melbournewater.com.au/community-and-education/about-our-water/water-storage-reservoirs/silvan | en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Evelyn_Aqueduct MEETING TIME | LOCATION: Arrive in time to catch the 679 Chirnside Park Shopping Centre bus departing from bus bay 10, Ringwood Railway Station at 11:01am.
