Scottish Highlands – Barge and Walking Tour: July 2019
Garry Oliver is planning a walk in Scotland in July 2019. Expressions of Interest are called for by Wednesday 5 December 2018. Once numbers are known, the detailed planning will commence. Individuals will be responsible for ensuring payment for the barge company in Scotland. The inspiration for this event came from a discussion with a charming Scottish lady aged in her late 70s who completed the Great Glen Walk accompanied by her daughter. So a few fit Nomads should enjoy the experience as well!
The plan is to start in the Scottish city of Inverness on Saturday 6 July 2019 and walk 126 km east-to west along the Great Glen to the town of Fort William. The Great Glen walk follows a natural fault line. The distance walked each of the seven days is between 16 and 24 km. It is NOT compulsory to walk each day – you can sit back and relax on the barge as it follows us along the way. The Barge sails along the 97 km of the Caledonian Canal that was built by the Scottish Engineer, Thomas Telford, in the 1888s and it connects up three lochs (including Loch Ness).
The walking track runs roughly parallel to the canal and the barge follows the walkers. There is a cook on board and all meals are provided (walkers are provided with a packed lunch). There are also numerous pre- and post- events, see below. The maximum number of spots available is 12, housed in twin share accommodation aboard a converted barge.

PRE- EVENTS
- A stay in either or both Edinburgh or Glasgow before the event would be sensible. These two Scottish cities are connected by a train service every 15 minutes and both can be reached by train from London in about 4 hours 30 minutes (from Euston – Virgin Trains). There are regular trains from Inverness and Fort William connecting to both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
- For the more adventurous plus those with time on their hands, another option pre the event is to visit New York City, which will be the 2019 World Pride City - 50 years since the famous Stonewall Riots. NYC is holding a week of celebrations in the last week of June 2019.
POST- EVENTS
- Fort William is the base for the “Harry Potter” steam train that runs up to Mallaig and back. Nearby is Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the United Kingdom.
