Heide Circuit Walk
Heide Museum of Modern Art
11:00 – 15:00
A circuit walk in the northeast of Melbourne, near Bulleen. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Grade 2: Easy 7 km circuit walk (graded according to the AWTGS: Australian Walking Tracks Grading System).  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This will be an easy walk through the Yarra Valley Parklands and Banksia Park, ending in the grounds of the Heide Museum of Modern Art for a late lunch. Heide is a public art museum and sculpture park located on a stretch of the Yarra River in Melbourne that has long served as a meeting point and as a creative hub. Once a significant Wurundjeri gathering place, the site later attracted the artists of the Australian Impressionist School before becoming the home of art patrons John and Sunday Reed in 1935. The Reeds and their circle of artists and writers, Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, Charles Blackman and Mirka Mora among them, embraced the brave and the new in art and ideas and their spirited legacy inspires the museum’s activities today, from collaborating with emerging and mid-career artists to celebrating those who have made major contributions to Australian and international art. Heide is renowned for its sculpture park. There are over 30 stunning works to discover across the 15-acre site including works by Inge King, Anish Kapoor, Anthony Caro and Neil Taylor. Jeff Thomson’s iconic Cows, 1987, are a playful reminder of the museum’s dairy farm origins.  Admission to the gardens and sculpture park is free, but a visit to the museum costs $20/25.  BOOKING: By Friday 25th April. To register, click on Get Tickets. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 11am at parking area in the Museum. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Public transport is available by bus, but is not very straightforward. MAP REFERENCE: Google map: maps.app.goo.gl/8EsRTWU6yjP1CqYx8 FOOD: Carry lunch, snacks and a litre of water.  There is a cafe at the museum, but this has yet to be checked out APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Comfortable walking boots and dress according to the weather forecast.   LEADER: Richard C. | Email LeaderRichardC@nomads.org.au if you have any questions. Anzac Day Cycling Loop: Fed Square - Main Yarra - Gardiners Creek - Anniversary - Main Yarra
Fed Square
10:30 – 17:00
An Anzac Day bike ride beginning and ending at Fed Square, but with many options to exit earlier.  GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: This is a medium grade ride of around 34 km, consisting of 29 km to lunch, then a further 5 km back to Fed Square. There's also the option to extend your ride by following the Main Yarra Trail after lunch all the way back to Fed Square (13 km rather than the 5 km direct route that the official ride will follow). There are easy and safe train station bailout options at regular intervals. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: From Fed Square, we will start out along the Main Yarra Trail then follow the Gardiners Creek Trail. We'll take a shortcut via the picturesque, but largely unsealed, Ferndale Trail to join the Anniversary Trail, which we'll follow to Alphington. At Alphington we will rejoin the Main Yarra Trail and ride on that to Abbotsford for lunch at the Convent Bakery. After lunch, we'll return to the CBD via some fairly direct, mostly on-road cycling paths, but you could also follow the Main Yarra Trail all the way back to Fed Square if you want a longer and more scenic ride (that route is approximately 8 km longer). For the route map, see LOOP: Fed Square - Main Yarra - Gardiners Creek - Anniversary - Main Yarra - Fed Square. BOOKING: By 5pm Thursday 24th April. To register click on Get Tickets. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 10.30am at the bike hoops on Birrarung Marr, beside Federation Square. (The photo is taken at the meeting point). The bike hoops are located on Birrarung Marr, between Swanston St and the MCG and between the river and the Federation Square Car Park. This is on the intermediate level - not the path right beside the river, and not the level of the main part of Federation Square. If you'd like a coffee, please get one (e.g. from Flinders Street Station) on your way to the meeting point. MAP REFERENCE: Google map maps.app.goo.gl/2xf6BuWahg6M61LJA.  FOOD: Lunch will be purchased at the Convent Bakery, which has some conventional cafe fare in addition to their wide range of baked goods. You should carry some water, plus snacks if you think you might need those. APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Comfortable attire that's suitable for the weather forecast, in addition to your bike and helmet. The properties have great views and spectacular granite outcrops. After the walks, if the day is hot we could go for a swim in the local waterhole, or if cold, we can soak in the hot tub/spa or have a warm-up in front of the large open fire. On Saturday evening we will be able to relax with a BBQ dinner, spa, massage, and socialising around the open fire. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: SATURDAY WALK: This walk is for naturists. We will meet and unload the cars at the overnight farmhouse anytime between 10.15am and 10:45am. Hot drinks and nibbles will be available until 11.15am. We will then have a briefing for the day around 11.40am and do a short carpool to the start of the walk. Lunch will be eaten at a good spot along the way when we get hungry. After lunch we will continue on for a bit to get more views and then circle around to get back to the cars to return to the farmhouse. If the day is hot we can then go for a nude swim in the lovely Mollison Creek swimming hole, or if it is cool have a soak in the hot tub.
