This event has been rescheduled to Sunday 8 October due to heavy rain forecast for 18 September!  A green and semi urban walk in Spring through parks, green belts and trails between Greensborough and Hurstbridge. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate approximately 17 km, mostly on off-road paths, with some initial steep climbs earlier in the walk.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Starting on the park side adjacent to Greensborough Station, we will briefly follow the Plenty River upstream, passing by playing fields before climbing uphill, skirting adjacent urban estates, keeping to greenbelt and parkland as much as possible, crossing a few serious roads, before coming down to join up with a mainly flat Diamond Creek Trail We will follow this upstream towards a proposed alfresco luncheon (BYO) stop, before continuing along the trail as far as Hurstbridge. Spring will provide much nature to admire along this route.  Opportunity to socialise afterwards at Pub before catching homeward train/bus (to Macleod) and train from there owing to track duplication work. Join fellow Nomads and friends for an online quiz night - an evening of fun and socialising from the warmth and comfort of your own home! Bring your food and drinks and get ready for two hours of socialising online. Play in teams as you try to outsmart your opponents in a Trivia Game. Afterwards, participate in games of Tic Tac Toe - if your team answers a question correctly you can strategically add a marker (a nought or a cross). Finally, we'll have a game of Wheel of Fortune, where you choose letters to try and solve a word puzzle.   Play starts at 7pm when everyone will be placed into teams. Ensure you register for this event in order to receive an email with your link to join on the night! We will be using the online Zoom program and the TriviaMaker gaming software to run the event. Enjoy a Sunday loop walk following the Yarra River and taking in the beautiful sites of glorious Melbourne in Spring. Easily access the starting location from Flinders Street Station to Birrarung Marr beside Federation Square. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate approximately 11 km, circuit walk, on off-road paths. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: We start from Birrarung Marr opposite Federation Wharf and Federation Square. On foot, we follow the main Yarra Capital City cycle trail alongside the Yarra River. We walk all the the way to MacRobertson Bridge where we cross the Yarra to the other side. We then proceed heading back to the City following the river. We hope to stop at the Kanteen cafe for a coffee in Alexandra Avenue provided they have tables available. A non-indigenous settlement was established in Kilmore in 1837, some 13 years after Hume and Hovell passed through from Sydney on a colonial government financed search for Westernport Bay. This makes Kilmore the oldest inland town in Victoria. The traditional owners of Kilmore and the Kilmore Plains are the Taubgurong people, a part of the Kulin nation. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate approximately 14 km, circuit walk, mostly on off-road paths, steep at times.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The walk will traverse East Kilmore Road before turning onto Monument Hill Road to checkout the marker on the spot visited by Hamilton Hume. The Hill walk passes excellent viewing spots of the greater Kilmore Plains and the Great Dividing Range. The wider Monument Hill Reserve contains many excellent flora and fauna specimens. Then downhill to pick-up the Kilmore Creek Trail into the centre of Kilmore, which houses many historic buildings dating from the mid 1800's. Lunch will be taken at a suitable spot along the Creek Trail. The final leg will be on Union Street, passing the Kilmore Racing Complex, then leading onto East Kilmore Road back to the Station.   Time permitting, an Afternoon Tea break will be taken at one of the two local bakeries located on Sydney Street before the 3 kms walk back to the Station.  BOOKING: By Thursday 1st September. A full week of cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and/or snowboarding, staying in a cosy lodge at Falls Creek. Stay the full week, or part thereof. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Your choice (choose slopes and equipment to match your skills) – cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and/or snowboarding.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: A full week, or part thereof, ski trip to Falls Creek is planned for Sunday 28th August to Sunday 4th September. We will be staying at the cosy Cosela Alpine Lodge which provides ski-in ski-out access from Wombats Ramble with no oversnow transport requirements. This will be a cross-country ski, downhill ski and/or snowboard week leaving Melbourne on Sunday and leaving Falls Creek the following Sunday. There are long-term parking facilities in Mt Beauty if you don’t wish to take your car up the mountain. If driving, take the Hume Freeway (M31) to Wangaratta then the Great Alpine Road (B500), turning off to Mt Beauty. On arrival at Falls Creek you should request to unload your luggage at the steps beyond the CFA station, which is lit at night, as you are staying at Cosela and don't need oversnow transport. After unloading, you will return to the attendant to be directed to a parking place. Cosela Lodge can then be reached by travelling up the steps and across Snowgum Lane (see map at www.cosela.com.au/Winter/Map.html). DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 391 km, 4.5 hours. FOOD: It's advisable to bring food for the period of your stay; group catering arrangements will be organised after registration. Breakfast cereal, milk, bread, jam, condiments, tea and coffee are provided by the lodge. There’s a local food store for last minute supplies and oversights. COST: The accommodation cost is $100 per Nomads member per night for Sunday through Thursday, and $240 for Friday plus Saturday night (i.e. $120 per night, but payment is required for both nights if either is required). You can come for the full time or part thereof. Get a ticket to indicate your intention to attend. The leader will then contact you to confirm dates and times, and to organise payment. Not a Nomads member? Purchase a temporary one-month membership before getting your tickets (cost $8). Enjoy an outing on Port Phillip Bay, lunch in Portarlington and an easy coastal walk, subsequently returning to Melbourne by bus and train. After lunch, we will go for a walk along the foreshore before catching the bus to Geelong Station, from where we'll catch a train back to Southern Cross Station (Melbourne). We'll walk along the foreshore towards St Leonards. A lovely 10 km coastal winter's walk, from historic Williamstown following coastal paths and walkways around to Altona. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy 10 km, point-to-point walk on sealed paths with no hills.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Starting in historic Williamstown we'll follow coastal paths and walkways around to Altona with opportunities to take in the local flora and fauna and breathe some good old sea air. Local history and points of interest will be provided en-route. Although there will be an opportunity for a short coffee break in Williamstown, and in Altona at the end of walk, bring your lunch (hot soup in a thermos, a good winter idea), snacks and water. Dress to the weather, with plenty of layers to take off/put on. It could be wet and cold that day.  BOOKING: By Thursday 11th August. The area now known as Lysterfield Park (1,398-hectare) has been assigned many different roles since the first European settlement in 1838. This very scenic circuit bushwalk will explore some of the remnants of its history. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate 11 km, circuit walk.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This walk takes us along some of the walking tracks around Lysterfield Lake – one of Melbourne’s older reservoirs that is nowadays a bushland park. Most of our route is on well-made tracks – some gravel, some formed earth. We will pass by the site of Donelan’s homestead, the Boy’s Farm dairy and the Lysterfield Tramway that includes one of the best view points of the lake on the west side. Enjoy a gentle walk alongside Lollipop Creek & the Werribee River. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: An easy 10 km point-to-point walk with public transport links. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This urban walk follows creek, floodway and river reserves which offer a combination of parkland and natural landscapes to enjoy along the way. Our walk commences at Wyndham Vale Railway Station with a short stroll through Manor Lakes Linear Park which takes us into the Lollipop Creek Reserve. The walk along the Lollipop Creek Trail takes in some of the re-vegetation and conservation measures along the waterway and surrounding wetlands. The croaking of frogs and chirping of birds are likely to be heard coming from the creek and wetlands. Approximately 4 km into the walk we leave Lollipop Creek to follow a path along grassy open space and floodway to reach the Werribee River Linear Reserve. For the remainder of the walk we will follow the Werribee River passing by natural vegetation including some impressive River Red Gums. On reaching Werribee the trail passes under the railway line near the station. Trains depart Werribee Railway Station every 20 minutes for the 50 minute journey back to the city. Explore some of the history of Sunbury in this urban walk in outer Melbourne. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy 9 km circuit walk. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This circuit walk explores the township of Sunbury, which was established in the 1850s. Firstly, we will walk up to Rupertswood Mansion, built in 1874. It is well known as the birthplace of The Ashes urn which was presented to the English cricket captain in the 1882-83 Test match series between Australia and England. It is one of the largest houses constructed in Victoria and, although now subdivided, still has significant farm land. The estate also had its own private railway station and artillery battery. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Although private property, owned by Salesian College, you can visit the grounds.  We will then follow sealed shared linear paths under a grand bluestone rail viaduct and along natural creeks (Blind and Kismet), although we will need to walk along some suburban streets to get between creeks and to and from the station.
